These three words—Burn the Ships—changed the course of history for a small army led by Hernán Cortés. When they landed on the shores of Veracruz in 1519, their mission was to conquer and claim treasure. To ensure absolute commitment, Cortés gave an unthinkable order: burn the ships. With no way to retreat, his men had only two choices—succeed or perish.

You might be asking, What does this have to do with me? My answer? Everything! True transformation only happens when we are so committed to change that we remove every escape route, every safety net, and every excuse. In other words, we must burn the ships.

Eliminate Every Other Option

When we stand at a crossroads, we have to make a choice: will we fully commit, or will we leave ourselves room to back out? The more options we give ourselves, the more likely we are to hesitate, delay, or abandon the change we need to make.

The word decide comes from the Latin verb caedo, caedere, meaning “to cut, kill, or slay.” It literally means to kill off every other option. When we truly decide to change, we cut away the possibility of turning back. We remove the distractions, the excuses, and the safety nets that keep us from moving forward.

Burning ships symbolize doing something that makes it impossible to turn back

Think about a restaurant with an overly large menu. When faced with too many choices, decision-making becomes overwhelming. But when the options are narrowed to just two or three, it becomes much easier to make a quick and confident choice. The same principle applies to life. The fewer exit strategies we give ourselves, the more likely we are to stay the course.

Moving forward is a choice we have to make, our past may be a “ship” we need to burn if it’s keeping us from forward movement, holding on to a person, or a habit may be a “ship” that’s keeping us from moving forward. A verse of scripture in the Bible that has been a guiding light for me is...

Philippians 3:13-14 “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have made it my own yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the [heavenly] prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

This idea of pressing represents a struggle that has to be overcome, and it is overcome by “forgetting what lies behind” (it’s behind us for a reason), just like the reason a rearview mirror is smaller than a windshield is because we weren’t meant to drive in reverse!

How Does This Apply to You?

Consider a major change you’ve been wanting to make—whether it’s starting a business, committing to a healthier lifestyle, or deepening your faith. What "ships" are you keeping in the harbor, just in case things get tough? Maybe it’s the mindset that says, If this doesn’t work, I can always go back. Maybe it’s staying in a comfort zone instead of stepping into the unknown.

Crossroads are a moment in time, in which one decision can change the rest of our life.

If you truly want transformation, it’s time to burn the ships. Remove the backup plans that keep you from going all in. Tell yourself, This is the only path forward, and I will make it work.

Success doesn’t come from half-hearted attempts. It comes from total commitment—the kind that leaves no room for turning back.

Strategies to Support Your Commitment

Implementing total commitment into your life requires actionable steps. Here are some strategies to help you “burn the ships” in your journey toward transformation:

  1. Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve. The more detailed your goals, the clearer the path becomes.

  2. Create a Concrete Plan: Develop a step-by-step plan that outlines how you will achieve your goals. Write it down, make it visible, and refer to it regularly.

  3. Surround Yourself with Support: Engage with people who share your vision and goals. They will help hold you accountable and provide encouragement during challenging times.

  4. Limit Distractions: Identify what distracts you from your goals and take steps to manage or eliminate those distractions. This might mean limiting social media or changing your environment.

  5. Develop a Growth Mindset: Embrace challenges and understand that failure is part of growth. With each setback, focus on the lessons learned and keep moving forward.

  6. Celebrate Small Wins: Recognizing your progress, no matter how small, can boost your motivation and keep your commitment strong.

The Role of Mindset in Total Commitment

Your mindset plays a critical role in how committed you can be. A growth mindset encourages you to view challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles. This shift in perspective is crucial for maintaining commitment in the face of adversity.

Adopt a mindset that embraces the struggle. Understand that every step forward may involve discomfort or uncertainty. Instead of allowing fear to dictate your path, use it as fuel for your journey.

Remember, the act of burning the ships is daunting, but the reward of unyielding focus and determination is immeasurable.

Taking Action and Moving Forward

So, what’s your next step? What ships do you need to burn today? Reflect on the areas of your life where you are still holding on to safety nets. Assess what commitments you need to make to progress fully.

For instance, if you aspire to launch a business, consider enrolling in a course or finding a mentor. The investment of time and finances can encourage you to stay committed by making failure less appealing.

In relationships, this could mean having tough conversations to eliminate toxic patterns. In health, it could involve removing junk food from your home to stay committed to your fitness goals.

The essence of "burning the ships" is to reinforce your resolve. When you choose to eliminate every potential backup plan, you reinforce to yourself that you are serious about the transformation ahead.

Your Path to Unwavering Commitment

In a world filled with distractions and retreat options, true commitment is a powerful tool for transformation. By burning the ships that keep you tied to indecision and fear, you cultivate an environment in which growth and success thrive.

Your journey may have challenges, but remember the soldiers of Hernán Cortés. They succeeded not merely because they had a mission, but because they had no retreat. Their total commitment changed their destiny and created a legacy of determination.

With this in mind, take those bold steps toward your goals. The pathway to success is often a lonely road, but it leads to extraordinary rewards when traveled with unwavering commitment.

Embrace the mindset of burning the ships. Make the decision today to cut off the alternatives and lean into your chosen path. The transformation you seek is waiting on the other side of total commitment; all you need to do is take that first step.
